Rust - the silent killer

The extent of rust is notoriously tricky to gauge so you want someone who knows what they’re doing.

Our Lower Hutt team have been in the business for years and we know that, until we start digging around, it's hard to predict what we’ll find. Our experience allows us to have a pretty good idea of what to expect and we always do our best to honour our estimates.

What’s wrong with a bit of rust?

Surely a bit of car rust can’t be THAT bad? Well, it is. Rust near a hinge or a seatbelt mount can be a disaster waiting to happen, as is rust around the windscreen and door apertures. Windscreens are a structural part of the car and if undermined can have drastic consequences, even in a minor car crash.

Rust around the windscreen?

Rust around windscreen apertures means the windscreen will have to come out – it’s a specialist job so we bring in the experts.

Supreme Screens are the trusted authority in this area.

We’ll quickly remove the rust, etch and paint the steel and have the screen replaced and sealed by a qualified professional.

Will the repaired areas be an ongoing problem?

We replace steel with ZincTec which is a zinc-coated steel superior to that which your car was originally made of and will outlast the rest of your car.

Rust is terribly invasive however and remains invisible as it spreads under car paint work. We’ll do our best to get to the bottom of your rust problem but we can’t guarantee you won't be back next year with rust elsewhere in your vehicle.

How do I prevent rust in the rest of my car?

According to Neil Young, rust never sleeps. But the best way to keep it at bay is to keep your car clean and free from salt spray. Kiwis love the sea but if you can, try not to park your car beside the sea as salt can be a major cause of car rust.

When washing your car make sure you clear any silt or mud gathering in the bottom of the front guard. Open the front doors and use a hose in the cavity. The same goes for around the rubber where the boot closes – remove any sand and silt that may have gathered.
